On Wednesday 17 April 2024 we received the news that Reverend Samson, who was arrested and imprisoned by the military junta in 2022, had been released to mark Myanmar’s new year celebrations. We praised God for this victory!

However, within hours of his release, we found out that Reverend Samson was taken away by the authorities once again.

Sources say that he is being detained under ‘house arrest’ at the Myitkyina prison guest house. The family have no idea what will happen next, nor do they know why he was detained again.

So far, the authorities have not given any justification for his detention.

Why was he first arrested? He has been prosecuted – like most religious and political prisoners – on trumped-up charges under counterterrorism laws, which are routinely used by the military to silence opposition.

The reality? Rev Samson is a fearless advocate, speaking out against the military regime’s brutal oppression of its people, particularly religious communities. And it’s made him a target.

His initial arrest and imprisonment in 2022 came after he held a prayer meeting with members of the opposition National Unity Government (NUG).

To arrest, jail and prosecute one of Myanmar’s most prominent Christian pastors is a sign of how hostile this regime is to the church, and to Myanmar’s religious minorities.

We want the UK government to be at the forefront of calls for his release.

Will you ask your MP to join the calls to #FreeRevSamson?
